Podcast: The Tacoma Dating Scene

January 11, 2018

What is Tacoma’s dating scene really like, these days? Marguerite is new to the dating scene and is looking for some pro-tips which led to her inviting a panel of singles to talk about hooking up in the City of Destiny. Disclaimer: Please remove children from the room- there might be swear words and sexiness. If you’re anything like Marguerite, get out your pen and paper and take some notes, folks.

  • First, let’s begin with the who and the what that makes these three masters of the Tacoma dating scene:

Gabe is a local barista and has been a Tacoman for 3.5 years. According to Marguerite he’s surrounded by a parade of beautiful women. Clearly, he has this dating thing down.

Najah is a local musician and has resided in Tacoma for 18 years. Marguerite was inspired by her sassy and empowered approach to the scene during a recent conversation over cocktails.

Matt is a 253 lifer, with 15 years spent in Tacoma, itself. Marguerite was looking for someone knowledgeable and comfortable with dating apps and technology who “wasn’t a dick,” Najah recommended Matt as that dude.

  • First thoughts: What things has Marguerite said about the dating scene in Tacoma that she regrets? Plus, why is it easy to be cynical and is it possible to separate the city of Tacoma’s inferiority complex and bad attitude from our (and others’) approach to the scene?

  • What’s working. Gabe says, “Tinder is NOT working.” Plus, the group talks about dating language, which is full of code words. Hanging out, hooking up, first base and cuddling, WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?! Is it a date or isn’t it?

  • Chemistry. The three explore dating etiquette: How long do you message before meeting? Who pays? Where do you go? And how do you move forward from the first date whether going on a second or transitioning to the friendzone.

  • Take notes! Pet peeves and best practices. NOTE: Marguerite is a liar and does not have gift cards.  Gabe’s approach is most direct, he simply asks “Hey, can I buy you a drink or dinner?” The ladies then volunteer him to host a dating workshop with regard to how to avoid the problematic, ambiguity.

  • Crazy dating stories follow where Gabe shows everyone up following up the perfect first date with a trip to the dump, literally. There were majestic bald eagles and a cow corpse.

  • What is the difference between the dating culture in Tacoma and Seattle. Najah, pretty much hits the right tone by talking about Tacomans warm and welcoming nature, whereas in Seattle, “you have to dazzle before people open up.“

  • Pro Tips: The group discusses activities, events and spaces that are ideal for meeting prospects or taking dates. Other pro advice includes eye contact and speaking up. While Matt thinks y’all should lower your standards on the app circuit and have fun meeting a variety of people. You might just learn something about yourself.
